December 16 – 20

Math Learning Goals:  Introduction to Division

3.4F(S)- recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 with automaticity and recall the corresponding division facts

3.4H(S)- determine the number of objects in each group when a set of objects is partitioned into equal shares or a set of objects is shared equally

3.4J(S)- determine a quotient using the relationship between multiplication and division

3.4K(R)- solve one-step and two-step problems involving multiplication and division within 100 using strategies based on objects; pictorial models, including arrays, area models, and equal groups; properties of operations; or recall of facts

3.8A summarize a data set with multiple categories using a frequency table, dot plot, pictograph, or bar graph with scaled intervals

3.8B solve one- and two-step problems using categorical data represented with a frequency table, dot plot, pictograph, or bar graph with scaled intervals

Math Homework:

Math homework is due Thursday.  It was passed out on Friday.  There will be no (paper) math homework over the break.  I would encourage everyone to still study their multiplication facts over the holiday break if possible.

Mad Minute:  There will be no mad minute this week.  Please continue to study previous facts learned so they will remember them after Christmas Break.  (0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 6’s)

Science Learning Goals: The Solar System  (students will be constructing models of the solar system using recyclable items)

3.1B- Make informed choices in the use and conservation of natural resources by recycling or reusing materials such as paper, aluminum cans, and plastics.

3.8C- Construct models that demonstrate the relationship of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, including orbits and positions

Important Dates:

Monday, December 16 – Wear Christmas hats

Tuesday, December 17 – Wear Christmas PJ’s

Wednesday, December 18 – Wear Christmas socks

Thursday, December 19 – Wear Christmas shirts or Christmas colors

Friday, December 20 – Christmas party 9:00-9:45 ( Students may be checked out after the party)

Christmas Party & Penny Christmas

It is time to start preparing for our 3rd Grade Christmas parties! Our parties take place on December 20th, from 9:00-10:00! We will celebrate these parties with a “Penny Christmas”. Third grade concentrates on the value of sharing memories with each other, not spending lots of money on a gift. With this is mind, students will share very inexpensive gifts with each other. Students are welcome to bring these gifts starting Monday, December 16. Each child will have a bag in their homeroom, made at school. In the past, some items bought for Penny Christmas have been: wrapped candy canes, stickers, erasers, bouncy balls, small bags of chips, unopened, individual bags of hot chocolate, wrapped bags of microwave popcorn, wrapped candy, etc. Each student will need to bring enough items for each student in their homeroom. There are 18 students in your child’s homeroom. We have 9 boys and 9 girls.  PLEASE REMEMBER NO NUT PRODUCTS WILL BE ALLOWED, due to serious allergies.

Week of December 9th – 13th

Math Learning Goals: Continue: 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication

3.4F(S)- recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 with automaticity and recall the corresponding division facts

3.4G(S)- use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial produce, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties

3.4J(S)- determine a quotient using the relationship between multiplication and division

Math Homework:

Math Homework is passed out on Fridays and due the following Thursday.  Also, please study multiplication facts (0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 6’s) will be tested this week.

Mad Minute ( Multiplication facts 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, and 6’s) is Thursday.  We will send a copy of their Mad Minute home on Friday to be signed.  Our Mad Minute consists of 30 problems and students have one minute to complete as many as possible.  Our goal is go get better each week.

Science Learning Goals:

3.1B- Make informed choices in the use and conservation of natural resources by recycling or reusing materials such as paper, aluminum cans, and plastics.

3.8C – Construct models that demonstrate the relationship of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, including orbits and positions

3.8D – Identify the planets in Earth’s solar system and their position in relation to the Sun
